Controlled Traffic Farming Alberta
We are please to link you to the final reports of our project. 2016 was the last year of on-farm research and the project came to a close on March 31, 2017. We would like to thank our cooperators and sponsors. The Alberta Crop Industry Development Fund (ACIDF) and the Alberta Canola Producers Commission (ACPC) provided the funding for the project while the Agricultural Research and Extension Council of Alberta (ARECA) was our managing partner..
The final reports are available on our website under the Plot Reports tab.

There are three final reports downloadable as pdfs:
  1. The 2014-17 CTFA Project Final Report
  2. Final Economic Analysis and Report
  3. The Impact of Controlled Traffic on Soil Quality in Alberta (summary of Masters Thesis work done on the plots)
There are also five summary reports downloadable as pdfs:
  1. On-Farm Research
  2. Economics of CTF
  3. Tramline Renovation
  4. Infiltration, Yield and Microbial Activity
  5. Soil Quality
Eight cooperator profiles. The profiles describe the cooperators farms, how they implemented CTF and future modifications they are considering.
Project Results
  • Cooperators were able to maintain yields
  • Overall looking at all site-years, the yield under CTF was significantly greater than under RT (random traffic) management, albeit the difference was small
  • Infiltration rate under CTF was significantly greater than under RT
  • Microbial activity, measured at the end of the project was similar for CTF and RT
  • No trends in crop emergence were observed
  • No weed population shifts were observed
  • Soil quality improved under CTF (Masters Thesis results)
CTF Conference - Proceedings of our wrap-up conference, held March 1, 2017, are available as downloadable pdfs from the Links tab.
